University of Houston – Discuss some issue of personal, local, national,
or international concern and its importance to you.
One local and national issue I want to bring forth is gay and
lesbian marriage. Although it doesn’t involve me personally but it does involve
my friends and the people in this nation. People say gay marriages will destroy
the sanctity of marriage, when there isn’t any sanctity to destroy. It bothers
me when people around me can be so shallow and make fun or harass someone for
different? For being gay?
I understand if you don't like that but don't be judgmental and
low. I don't know why the government can put laws against same sex marriage. Its
love! You can't put a law against that. It could be someone’s parents you're
taking freedom from!
People
argue about this constantly, and use God as an example “God doesn’t love gay
people” or “he didn’t make gay people”. Yet the truth is God told us to love
one another and not to judge. So it doesn't give you the credibility to win
that argument. I believe they should allow gay and lesbian marriages or should
I say normal marriages. It's not hurting anyone; it's not taking anyone's rights
away. I think it’s perfectly normal, its honestly just love. Instead it’s okay
to fire people from jobs for being gay. They allow you to marry your cousin in
more states than marry the person of your choice, everything about that is
sickening.
Falling in love should not be looked upon no matter what sex you
choose to fall in love with. No one should be able to take that away from you,
but this cruel world we live in thinks they have the power to do so.
Currently seven states have legalized gay marriage: Iowa, Vermont, New
York, Connecticut, Massachusetts, Washington, New Hampshire, plus Washington
D.C. Now think if that number became bigger such as twenty states, forty states,
or even better fifty states, gays and lesbians wouldn’t have to live in secret.
We’re keeping people from living there life, from living their American dream,
from having freedom with United States so calls giving us. There needs to be
justice to this situation soon.
University Of North Texas – Indicate
a person who has had a significant influence on you, and describe that
influence
One
single person has had an absolutely permanent fixture throughout my life. My
mother, Carrie Simpson. I have met a significantly greater number of people in
my short lifetime than the average seventeen year-old. Each had their own
strengths and weaknesses and my mom is no different. Let me be clear when I say
I would not consider my mom to be my hero. The term "hero", to me, implies a
certain natural ability beyond the normal scope of human talents to complete
the challenge or challenges set forth to them. My mom certainly does not and
did not have any natural abilities to complete or deal with the challenges life
threw at her. She had only her talents as a writer and determination. She is
only human and this has made her influence on me and my life all the more
powerful.
The first place I ever lived was in a small
one bedroom apartment in a Hotel which is in downtown Fort worth. The entire
building had a general atmosphere of "funk" due to it's transient inhabitants
of artists and semi-permanent residents. The "cleaning ladies" and our
neighbors became part of my family. Just next door was the African-American
artist Herbert Gentry and his wife Mary Anne Rose. Curtis and Dvonna were like
family to me in every way besides blood. When Herb died, he left me a small globe I used to play with when I visited. I
keep it to this day.
He meant so much to me, I’ll never forget him. Eventually we
left the one bedroom apartment and found a three bedroom apartment. My mother
always made sure I was taken care of!
My
mom influence definitely influenced me in much way. She
makes it well known that keeping our eyes on the prize and not letting anyone
change that. She’s the most supportive mom, and she has always been there since
the day I was born. There’s just not anyone who can take my mother’s place or
amount to what she has done for me these past 17 years.

July
came more quickly than I had planned. Before I knew it, it was time to go on the
Mission trip I had nonchalantly signed up for at church over the winter. Even
after going to the informational meeting about the trip to Destin, Florida I was
still less than enthusiastic. I had signed up only as a favor to my parents so
I could put some more volunteer hours on my college applications. I was
disappointed to find out that only one of my friends was coming on the trip and
all other participants were younger than me. I left for the reservation of
Baton Rouge, Louisiana feeling sorry for myself because I would be missing
precious days of summer lounging. I put on a happy face for the twelve hour car
ride with the group but dreaded finally arriving at the small Baptist Church we
would be staying in for the following week. Our group put together activities
such as sports games, crafts, slip-and-slides, horseback riding, and a daily
religion lesson. All I wanted was for the week to pass by as quickly as
possible so I decided to put as much effort into the day to day activities as I
could. When I put my feelings aside, I began to have as much fun as the kids
were having and time flew by. As
each day passed, I became more involved in the games and activities. I also
became more involved with the kids from the Reservation. During the craft or
small group religion lessons I was able to learn more about each individual
child little by little.
As time went on I realized that going on this trip was probably one of the best
decisions of my life! Being around such happy people that give a lot of praise
to someone that created them influenced me the most! I’ll never forget that week
long experience.
